Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better than the general public by the name of Queen Latifah - is an American actress, rapper and a singer. Queen Latifah's career in music film and television has earned her an Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award and six more Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot and Rita Owens, both police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher, who taught in Irvington High School. The couple divorced when Latifah was just 10 years old. Latifah went to Catholic School in Newark, NJ and was educated through her family's Baptist Church. Latifah was her stage name before she was eight years old. It means very delicate in Arabic. Latifah, a 5'10" tall power forward for the high school team, was always tall. At her school's game Latifah sang "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah started beatboxing for the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah was a part of the Flavor Unit's original group that included several MCs as well as producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded the rap of Queen Latifah, aka Princess of the Posse. He gave it back to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah after hearing the song. The singer released her debut single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
